A unique exhibit featuring innovative ideas related to coastal development and sea level rise opens on Friday, July 10, at the historic San Francisco Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco and runs through July 19. The exhibit, called “Rising Tides,” is the culmination of an international design competition hosted by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) and sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Throughout the world, estuaries like Chesapeake Bay, the Yangtze River Delta, Puget Sound and San Francisco Bay are national treasures that contribute to their regional environments as well as the global economy. With an expected sea level rise of over four feet in the next 100 years, global warming stands to have dire consequences for these critical coastal areas. Some $62 billion in public and private development and more than a quarter of a million people are expected to be adversely affected in the Bay Area alone.

The competition, which has been held over the past four months, was spearheaded to provide a unique opportunity to solicit any and all ideas regarding future coastal development, particularly in terms of preserving existing resources and infrastructure. The competition garnered some 130 entries from more than 18 countries that range from the plausible and pragmatic to the aggressively imaginative. All entries add a new dimension to the discussion of sea level rise adaptation and go beyond what one would normally think of when discussing shoreline protection. An esteemed international jury will judge the entries on Monday, July 13, and the winner of the competition’s grand prize of $10,000 will be announced on Tuesday, July 14 at 10 a.m.

All entries will be on display on the upper level of the Ferry Building from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except for the jury’s deliberation day on Monday, July 13.

About BCDC

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is a state agency that was created by the California Legislature in 1965 with the charge of minimizing future unnecessary filling of the Bay. Unfortunately, the greatest threat to the San Francisco Bay Area over the next century is not that the Bay will get smaller, but that climate change will make the Bay larger and threaten existing communities, public infrastructure and wetlands. To address this, BCDC has developed a climate change planning project to identify the potential Bay-related impacts of and approaches for adapting to global climate change.
