The What: BayREN provides free engineering technical assistance to help local governments in the San Francisco Bay Area save energy and money while reducing their carbon footprints. The Municipal ZNE/ZNC Assistance program helps municipalities retrofit or construct buildings to meet zero net energy (ZNE) or zero net carbon (ZNC) goals by providing engineering analysis and recommendations for projects. The Electrification Training Series will offer three online sessions on how to work towards ZNE and ZNC goals.

Existing Buildings

Collaborating with jurisdictions across Bay Area in their effort to achieve carbon neutrality by increasing energy efficiency at existing buildings, electrifying carbon intensive equipment, and expanding use of low and non-carbon energy supply.

  • Develop a finite list of potential energy efficiency and decarbonization measures
  • Develop on-site generation strategies to achieve ZNC/ZNE.
  • Analyze systems for project level costs
  • Detailed energy savings
  • Estimate GHG emission reductions

New Construction Projects

Develop feasibility analysis of a new construction projects, providing jurisdictions with different alternatives between ZNE/ZNC by using EnergyPlus models to determine post-construction energy use for different alternatives.

  • Estimate energy consumption of the entire building
  • Analysis of capital and maintenance cost for individual measure or a group of measure
  • Life cycle cost assessment or cost benefit analysis

The Electrification Training Series will be held virtually.
