Inaugural ESG & Decarbonizing Real Estate Forum

Editor’s Foreword:

How can we do our part in keeping the commitment to achieve the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target? The real estate and investment markets play a key role in this commitment as the buildings they build, manage and invest in, account for nearly 40% of annual global CO2 emissions. While the concept of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) has been around for awhile, companies and investors around the world have begun to take ESG seriously in the last few years and are moving ahead full speed. Organizations such as GRESB can assist the investment industry in creating a sustainable world and provide financial markets with actionable insights, ESG data and benchmarks. How can we as architects, engineers, and designers help the industry tackle the Environmental component, making our buildings more water and energy efficient, resilient, and carbon neutral? How can we all contribute to the race to achieving zero net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions?

The inaugural ESG & Decarbonizing Real Estate Forum this summer will bring together leaders from the real estate and investment markets to share their insights and shed light on how the industry is responding to ESG. ESG considerations are being embedded into every stage of a property’s lifecycle. Awareness is growing in such a way that the real estate market can have a significant positive impact on the environment, diversity and inclusion, social responsibility, and impact investment opportunities. But ESG is not just about checking boxes and meeting requirements. Investors, employees, customers, suppliers, and tenants are all paying attention, and are demanding that standards be raised. Investors understand that ESG is a driver for long-term value and sustainability, and it has become an important part of the decision making around where they allocate capital.

The What: ESG & Decarbonizing Real Estate Forum will explore all of the issues surrounding ESG including impacts on development and investment, criteria for owners, managers, developers and builders; best practices to improve ESG scores; how to manage disclosures and reporting; impacts on residential and commercial markets; and strategies around closing the gap between profitability, sustainability and making real commitments to social change.
