Southface’s Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable will discuss lessons learned from The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design on Friday, March 1st, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The event is sold out but the organizers will be streaming live on their Facebook page at 7:30 am EST. Tune in then at www.facebook.com/SouthfaceInst.
The Georgia Institute of Technology received a commitment for $30 million from The Kendeda Fund to build what is expected to become the most environmentally advanced education and research building ever constructed in the Southeast – The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design. Intended use of the building include education, research, and outreach opportunities; building will feature two 75-person classrooms, two 24-person class labs, makerspace, 170-person auditorium, rooftop apiary and pollinator garden, and office space for co-located programs.
Currently under construction, the project is expected to meet the Living Building Challenge 3.1 standards and its certification will be in 2020, one year after move in.
The projected EUI (Energy Use Intensity) is 34, which is 66 percent more efficient than an average building of the same size and occupancy. The photovoltaic array is designed to generate 40 EUI which will offset the building’s 34 EUI. By producing more energy than the building consumes, the systems generate a net-positive energy facility. Solar Array: 913 solar panels to be installed in the fall 2018 are expected to generate 328 kw. Cistern Capacity: 50,000-gallon cistern in the basement of the building.
Panelists representing The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design will discuss ways the project addresses environmental challenges facing the Southeast’s building sector through requirements such as sustainable materials use.

Georgia Tech has a great website that tracks the building progress of the project, and provides interactive image maps that guide you through the living building’s spaces and features. Individuals and groups make book a tour of the construction site.
