Congratulations to developer MidPen Housing and David Baker Architects, one of my favorite San Francisco architecture firms to work with, for winning the 2013 ULI Global Award for Excellence for its LEED Platinum certified project, Station Center Family Housing in Union City, California.
Station Center consists of two buildings housing 157 high-density affordable rental apartments, community gardens, a public playground, commercial spaces, and a community center located in a newly developed mixed-use district next to the Union City BART station.
The building design comprises of a range of complementary sustainable strategies such as solar thermal for domestic hot water, high-efficiency boilers, and a solar photovoltaic system to achieve LEED for Homes Mid-Rise Platinum certification. The Bay-friendly landscape design is estimated to save 193,282 gallons of water per year in comparison to a conventionally landscaped property.
