About the event

This regional in-person seminar presents an introduction to mass timber structural systems and framing strategies. Participants review manufacturing methods, material properties, and design considerations for common components such as cross-laminated timber, nail-laminated timber, glued laminated timber, and structural composite lumber. The session addresses how product choices influence acoustic control, fire resistance, structural performance, constructability, and building code compliance. Discussion covers core framing layouts including bearing wall, post-and-beam, post-and-plate, and hybrid models, emphasizing system selection, structural optimization, and early coordination with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection infrastructure.

What you’ll learn

  • Describe the manufacturing processes, material characteristics, and structural applications of common mass timber products, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), nail-laminated timber (NLT), glued laminated timber (glulam), and structural composite lumber (SCL).
  • Evaluate the structural, fire-resistance, and acoustic performance characteristics of various mass timber elements and their implications for safe and code-compliant building design.
  • Compare common mass timber framing systems including bearing wall, post-and-beam, post-and-plate, and hybrid configurations and identify factors that influence system selection and structural efficiency.
  • Apply relevant building code provisions, reference standards, and design resources to the preliminary design and coordination of mass timber floor, wall, beam, and column systems, including integration with building infrastructure systems.
