About the event

This regional in-person seminar introduces architects and engineers to mass timber structural systems and product selection. Attendees will examine structural components including cross-laminated timber, nail-laminated timber, glulam, and structural composite lumber, assessing how these materials influence fire resistance, acoustics, constructability, and code compliance. Led by structural engineer Jason Bahr, the session covers fundamental framing configurations such as bearing wall, post-and-beam, post-and-plate, and hybrid layouts. Participants will also explore early coordination with building infrastructure systems to optimize structural efficiency. Lunch is provided during the presentation.

What you’ll learn

  • Describe the manufacturing processes, material characteristics, and structural applications of common mass timber products, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), nail-laminated timber (NLT), glued laminated timber (glulam), and structural composite lumber (SCL).
  • Evaluate the structural, fire-resistance, and acoustic performance characteristics of various mass timber elements and their implications for safe and code-compliant building design.
  • Compare common mass timber framing systems—including bearing wall, post-and-beam, post-and-plate, and hybrid configurations—and identify factors that influence system selection and structural efficiency.
  • Apply relevant building code provisions, reference standards, and design resources to the preliminary design and coordination of mass timber floor, wall, beam, and column systems, including integration with building infrastructure systems.
